I've used these successfully with the aforementioned laptop to use my flash drives to transfer data back and forth. There are generic Mass Storage Drivers available for 98SE (and FE, I believe).
What this usually means is that you would need to install a special driver for whatever drive you install (from the manufacturer). Windows 98SE fully supports USB, however it does not have generic class drivers for things like Mass Storage Devices. (my laptop from 1995 has a USB 1.1 port).įlash drives are compatible, the problem is in fact with Windows 98. There were only a handful of machines fitted with USB 1.0 1.1 was ratified quite soon after, pretty much before USB started to gain momentum. Also, would hardware with 1.0 or 1.1 connectors work if I added 2.0 ports? I'm hoping one of you tech guru's can help me out here as I'm stumped. Is there a way to find out what version (1.0 or 1.1) it has? Also, what would I need to do to upgrade to 1.1 if it turns out it has 1.0? I read somewhere that win 98se comes with drivers for 1.1 as default. It was suggested the pc might just have usb 1.0 port which is why it isn't working. It works fine with an old laptop running 2000.
I was told 2.0 flash drives are backwards compatible, so it should work with old comps with 1.1 usb ports. I'm trying to back up data from an old win 98 pc but when I use a flash drive usb 2.0 it has a fit half way through installing the drivers and I get a blue screen error. Hoping you can help me out a novice here.
